Staging a whole-home fit-out on a budget

A brand-new house is expensive before you've hung a single blind. The good news: you don't have to do every window at once. Done right, staging costs you nothing extra, and the house never looks half-finished.

Measure the whole house, fit it in stages

The trick is to separate the two decisions. Measuring and planning the whole home happens once, up front, at the free measure. Fitting it can then happen in as many stages as your budget wants. Because everything is already measured and quoted, a later stage is just a phone call, no second measure, no starting over.

A sensible order to stage in

  • Stage one: the first-night rooms. Kids' bedrooms, the main bedroom, bathrooms and any window facing the street. This is what makes the house livable and private from day one.
  • Stage two: the living zones. Open-plan living, the kitchen, the study, so the everyday rooms are comfortable and glare-free.
  • Stage three: the rest. The rear slider, spare rooms, the laundry, anything that can happily wait.

Most homes we fit out this way land in two or three stages. Some do the bedrooms and bathrooms first and the whole front-of-house later. It's your call, room by room.

Why it doesn't cost more. The expensive part of a fit-out isn't the measure, it's the made-to-measure coverings. Splitting when they're made and fitted doesn't change what they cost. What staging avoids is paying twice for call-outs and measures, which is exactly why we measure the lot once.

Keep the house consistent

The risk with doing rooms piecemeal over years is a house that ends up mismatched, three shades of white and four styles of blind. Planning the whole schedule up front fixes that: the fabrics and styles for every room are chosen together at the start, so stage three still matches stage one even if it's a year later.
